Richard V. Romero, a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and cherished friend to many, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2025, surrounded by his family. Born on March 4, 1945, in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Richard was one of six siblings and the beloved son of Manuel and Ignacita Romero.
Richard was known for his unwavering love and dedication to his family. As a father, he was a source of guidance, wisdom, and support, always placing his children’s needs above his own. As a grandfather, he found immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren, sharing stories, laughter, and life lessons they will treasure forever.
After graduating from Santa Rosa High School in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, Richard was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967 and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. His service exemplified his courage, strength, and sense of duty, qualities that defined him throughout his life.
Upon returning home from his military service, Richard married the love of his life, Nina, on January 22, 1972. Their 52-year marriage was a beautiful testament to love, partnership, and unwavering devotion. Together, they built a life filled with cherished memories, raising a family and celebrating countless milestones. Their bond was an inspiration to all who knew them.
Richard had a distinguished career in telecommunications, working for companies such as Mountain Bell and AT&T. Following his retirement from the telecommunications industry, he continued his professional journey as a federal contractor for the Department of Energy. Outside of his work, Richard enjoyed staying active, working out, and most of all, creating lasting memories with his family.
An avid sports fan, Richard had a special devotion to the University of New Mexico Lobos. He loved attending sporting events, whether cheering on the Lobos or supporting his grandchildren on the field, court or wherever they played. His enthusiasm for sports brought joy and connection to his family and friends.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Nina; his children, Eric and Nick (spouse Leah); his grandchildren, Alexander, Matthew, and Oliver; and his sister, Barbara Padilla. He was predeceased by his parents, Manuel and Ignacita Romero, and his siblings, Anita Anaya, Gilbert Romero, Herlinda Velarde, Carmen Houlihan, and Eddie Romero.
A funeral service will be held on January 16, 2025, beginning with a Rosary at 9:30 a.m., followed by Mass at the Shrine of Saint Bernadette (11509 Indian School Rd NE, Albuquerque, NM). Richard will be laid to rest in a Mausoleum crypt in the chapel at Mount Calvary Cemetery (1900 Edith Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM). A reception and meal will follow in the gathering hall at Saint Bernadette. Flowers may be sent to Trujillo Family Funeral Home.
