Michael Romero, our beloved brother, went to be with our Lord on January 29, 2024 in Albuquerque, NM. Michael during his life also had the titles of son, grandson, uncle, nephew, and cousin. Michael was born on August 1, 1959, to Rudolfo A. and Mary T. Romero in Santa Fe, NM. Michael is survived by his siblings Albert (Jill), Leonard (Lorraine), Roseana Fullmer (Danny), Suzanne Romero Kanaly (Steve); nieces Christina Fullmer (Daron Unholz) and Anastacia Skelly (Chris), great-niece Mary, great-nephew Henry, and many close cousins. Michael was preceded in death by his parents Rudolfo and Mary Romero, brother Ivan John Romero, grandparents Alberto and Anastacia Romero and Alfredo and Eleanor Tapia, along with many uncles, aunts and cousins. Michael was born with a developmental disability. At the time of his birth and early childhood, the medical profession was unable to diagnose his disability. It would be years later when it was determined that he had been born without a thyroid, which in turn created many of his challenges. Michael received unconditional love from his parents and family including the team that cared for him in Albuquerque. Michael in childhood knew he was different and would at times ask “Why.” No answer was given but perhaps the best answer would have been our dad’s description of Michael: “Michael is special and is a child of God.” Although Michael was non-verbal, he found ways to communicate including some sign language. If you grabbed your coat to go out, Michael would grab his too in hopes for a car ride or a walk around the neighborhood. He knew where the cookies were at family homes and made a beeline to the kitchen upon entering. When he was happy, his laugh was infectious. He loved being the center of attention and celebrations of his birthdays (i.e. cake, ice cream, Dr. Pepper). Michael received the Catholic sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation at the Basilica Cathedral of St. Francis. He also received First Communion in Los Lunas, NM. Michael made many visits throughout the years to the chapel at the Carmelite Monastery in Santa Fe as well to the Santuario de Chimayo. He enjoyed these visits. Michael thrived with his most recent team of therapists and social workers. He participated and looked forward to their outings. We are most grateful for their compassion and intent on Michael having the best life. He had many good caregivers throughout his life. Most recently, Mr. Israel "Izzy" Luna was Michael's favorite. One might believe that it was because Izzy took him to his favorite Chick Fil A or to the aquarium, but the real reason is that Izzy took the time to determine what made Michael happy. We have always believed Michael was God's angel on earth. Even though we mourn today, we rejoice that he is no longer enduring pain and suffering and that he has passed to heaven in the Glory of God the Father and Jesus our Savior.
We reflect and remember all the wonderful and loving times we shared together, so please know, precious brother, that you will always be in our hearts and minds forever more. To paraphrase the Boys Town motto, “Michael, you were not heavy, you were our brother.” Visitation will take place at 9:30 a.m. at Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis, Santa Fe, NM, on April 16th .Rosary will be prayed at 10:00 a.m. followed by the eulogy. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the New Mexico Special Olympics in Michael's name.
