Marlene Tompkins

April 22, 1932 — December 3, 2024

Marlene Tompkins, born April 22, 1932 in Granbury, Texas passed away on Dec 3, 2024 after a brief

illness. Marlene lived a full, busy life with 4 children. Marlene found a love for art early in her life and

became an accomplished artist well into her 60’s. She obtained her bachelor’s degree from California

State University, Northridge in Art History in 1976, while raising her family. Her early works consisted of

seascapes and still lifes, both in oil paint, and pencil drawings. She then took up sculpting, and finally

migrated to abstracts while she could still see colors but not sharp images. She finally had to lay down

the paintbrush and pallet knife due to blindness caused by macular degeneration.

Fiercely independent, Marlene was determined to take care of herself and not burden her children. She

lived independently in her own home until two weeks before her death.

Marlene is survived by three of her children: son Larry Scurlock and wife Cindy Alexander, daughter

Carol Scurlock Garcia, and son Jon Michael (Mike) Scurlock and wife Denese. She also leaves

grandchildren Edward Garcia and wife Shannon, Michael Garcia and wife Erica, Zackery Scurlock, Katrina

Scurlock, John Scurlock and one great grandchild, Allyn Garcia. She was preceded in death by her

parents Roy Tompkins, Goldie Tompkins (nee Sligar), sister Jean Duffield, first husband Bobby Scurlock,

second husband Ken Mingo, and son Roy Thomas (Tom) Scurlock.

Marlene’s wishes were to be cremated and she will find her final resting place in a city she has always

considered home, San Antonio Texas. A small celebration of life will be held in the near future.
