Liberato “Libby” Segura, age 86, of Sile, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2024, with his loving family by his side. Born on March 17, 1938, he was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Libby was preceded in death by his parents, Damacio and Elizabeth Segura; his beloved son, Benny Segura; his grandson, Bryan Johnson; his son-in-law, Mario Flores; and his siblings, Frank Segura, Martha Segura, and Vina Gallegos. Libby's legacy of love and kindness shone brightly through his family and friends.
Libby was known for his generosity and compassion. He always lent a helping hand to anyone in need. He was a devoted member of the Penitentes of San Mateo, New Mexico, and retired from the City of Albuquerque in 1999. An accomplished musician, he contributed his talents to New Mexico's Spanish music scene, performing with the Purple Haze as a vocalist and alto saxophonist and performing “Viejo el Viento.” He was inducted into the New Mexico Hall of Fame in 2008 and played alongside his brother Frank Segura with The Night Owls and his band, La Clinica, with his late nephew Joe Gallegos Jr. for many years. He also shared his musical gifts with the Spanish choir at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church until the onset of COVID-19. Libby’s passions extended beyond music. He found joy in fishing, maintaining his yard with an impeccable green thumb, and dressing sharply in his dress pants and shirts, always looking his best. His sense of humor was legendary—we often joked that he stayed up late creating new jokes and loved to make others laugh. In his final days, he joked that “this was his circus, and we were his clowns,” showcasing his enduring spirit and joy in bringing laughter to those around him.
Libby is survived by his devoted wife of over 50 years, Mrs. Ida Segura (Salazar); his children Veronica Serrano (Polo), Nena Saiz (Michael), Pat Segura (Kelly), Jerry Segura (Rose), Antonio Segura, Twiggy (Joan) Segura, Roxanne Segura, and Christina Flores; twenty grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. Libby’s warmth, wisdom, music, and humor will be deeply missed.
As the patriarch of the Segura family, his legacy of love and laughter will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched. In honoring his memory, we celebrate a life well-lived and a spirit that will continue to bring joy to our lives.
