Karen Sue Spungen

Rio Rancho, New Mexico

Karen Sue Spungen, aged 70, passed away on January 27, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her family after a brief battle with cancer. She is survived by her devoted husband, Al Spungen; daughters and sons-in-law, Jennifer and Kris Thibault, and Amy and Steve Miller; grandchildren, Stephen, Brooke, and Paige Miller, and Olivia and Georgia Thibault; great grandson, Stephen Miller; sister, Stacey Williams; brothers, Luke Chandler and Lane Chandler; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and Norma Chandler; her brother, Phillip “Bruce” Chandler; and her sister, Brenda Bernal.

Karen was a source of strength, joy, and affection in all her personal and professional relationships. Karen was loved by everyone she met and was a fierce advocate for human rights. She had a great love for animals (excluding spiders), wildflowers, good literature, and music. She cherished travel and the beauty of the Western United States but loved her family above all else.

A celebration of Karen's life will be held on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at the Lakeside Nature Center in Kansas City, Missouri from 1:00 pm-3:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Karen, the family requests that donations be made to the Lakeside Nature Center, a place she dearly loved. Donations can be made online at Lakeside Nature Center Donations, or checks can be made to Friends of Lakeside Nature Center and dropped off or mailed to Friends of Lakeside Nature Center, 4701 E Gregory Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64132. Please note that the donations are in honor of Karen Spungen.

Karen's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered their support and condolences during this difficult time. Your kindness and compassion are a testament to the love and respect that Karen inspired throughout her life. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to shine brightly in the lives of those she touched.
