Gwen Barela

October 6, 1966 – November 16, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gwen Barela, 58, who left us peacefully surrounded by her loving family. Born in Albuquerque, NM, Gwen was a remarkable human being whose love and kindness touched everyone around her.

Gwen cherished and was devoted to her parents, Eugene and Anna Padilla. Gwen was often called the “other parent” and “Velcro child” as she always ensured her father was doing what his Dr’s told him to do. Gwen enjoyed shopping with her parents and often spent many hours with them, relaxing, in the comfort of her parents home where she grew up.

Gwen held a special place in her heart for her siblings, Gina & Randy Gutierrez, Donna & Gary Cortez, and Eric Padilla. Gwen embraced her stepchildren, Juliana Barela, Frankiepaul, Bebe Gabaldon, and grandchildren sharing a strong bond with her aunts and cousins, both near and far. Among her cherished relationships was her close connection with Geraldine Ware, with whom she shared many treasured moments.

Her sisters-in-law—Stephanie Barela, Lucy Barela, and Phyllis O’Gorman and Judith Barela, Mother-in-law —became more than family; they were her sisters, united through laughter and heartfelt conversations. The love shared with Julian’s sisters created an unbreakable network of support and sisterhood.

Gwen’s loyalty and support shone through in her friendship with Eveline Zamora. She embraced life fully, finding joy in the beauty of sunrises, camping trips, and her deep affection for Capitan, NM, where her father grew up. Her love extended to her nieces and nephews, Breanna, Christopher, and Henry, who brought her immense joy.

A beautiful testament to Julian and Gwen’s marriage! Their relationship truly flourished through their shared faith and love for Jesus, evident in their devotion to the Catholic Church. Attending the 8am mass with Father Andy was not just a routine for them; it was a cherished time of spiritual connection that deepened their bond and strengthened their commitment to each other and their faith.

Gwen was an extraordinary wife, embodying devotion and love for Julian Barela throughout their twenty-six years together. Their relationship was a beautiful tapestry woven from shared experiences and cherished moments. Whether camping under the stars, savoring meals at their favorite restaurants, or relaxing on their patio, Gwen's presence made every moment special.

Their weekends were filled with delightful routines, often involving takeout and curling up on the couch to watch old movies. These simple joys became the foundation of their life together, filled with laughter, comfort, and a deep connection. Gwen’s unwavering support and affection enriched Julian's life, and their bond grew stronger with each passing year. Together, they created a lifetime of memories, celebrating the beauty in both adventure and tranquility.

An avid reader, Gwen found solace in movies and spiritual teachings, particularly the Old Testament lectures by Father Mike Schmidt and the series "The Chosen." She treasured shopping trips with her parents, always prioritizing their happiness.

Gwen’s generosity, kindness, and zest for life made her an extraordinary individual whose light will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew her.
